On Friday 1st June 2018 we mark the 11th year of the death of John Moriarty. The Irish writer, poet, mystic and philosopher was a much beloved figure in Ireland.  The poet Paul Durcan has described Moriarty as ‘the original, radical, non-conformist questioner’. Born in 1938 in Moyvane, Co. Kerry, Moriarty studied philosophy in UCD before lecturing at the University of Manitoba in Canada. He left academia to move to Connemara to work as a gardener. Who are you and what is your role at Lilliput Press? My name is Shauna, and I am the current publicity intern for The Lilliput Press. The main aspects of my job are all based around social media and event organization – two tasks that complement each other well. I organize all the book launches for our upcoming releases. This involves securing a venue, negotiating fees, ensuring there will be a crowd, accommodating guest speakers and organizing the sale of books at the event. The Lilliput Press regrets the loss of this vibrant figure: friend of the Press, founder of Claddagh Records, patron of poets, traditional Irish music lover, bibliophile and bon viveur. Luggala, a Petit Trianon, near Roundwood in County Wicklow, was his seat of entertainment where he hosted the great and not-so-good across art’s spectrum. We celebrate his life and the gaiety it afforded, while mourning the passing of a chief amongst men. Thank you for the days, Garech.  

To celebrate International Women’s Day 2018, The Lilliput Press reached out to three of our most esteemed female fiction writers; Rosita Sweetman, Elske Rahill and Caroline Preston. Each one of them provided fascinating insights into the historical and generational importance of feminism. Elske Rahill, author of 2013’s Between Dog and Wolf and 2017’s In White Ink, spoke on what it means to be a feminist writer: ‘Feminism is about much more than ‘add women and stir’. Newlyweds and local celebrities Michael and Matt (or M&M as they call themselves!) popped over to Lilliput today to celebrate Valentine’s day and to show off their beautiful special edition copy of Ulysses. They received this Lilliput Press edition from Joe Duffy and Mrs. Brown herself last Christmas eve as a joint Christmas and wedding present. Today is a day to celebrate every kind of love and there is definitely plenty between these two wonderful people.

Philip Casey, Dublin-based novelist, poet and champion of Irish writing, native of Gorey, Co Wexford, died at 5.20pm Sunday 4 February. We mourn the passing of a radiant spirit and friend of the Press, and salute his achievements. Lilliput published his first novel, The Fabulists, winner of the Listowel Book of the Year award in 1995. Sebastian Barry noted his ‘Mortally angelic writing’. He went on to be published by Picador in the UK and his poetry appeared with Dermot Bolger’s Raven Arts Press.       Antony Farrell, publisher
