My Work Experience at Lilliput

By:

My name is Alison and I am currently on a week of work experience at The Lilliput Press. As a recent Journalism graduate with a passion for books and a strong determination to work in publishing, finding any experience within said industry is invaluable.

I have found that the experience I have gained whilst at The Lilliput Press truly beneficial. Because The Lilliput Press is a small independent publisher, it allows me to get the absolute most out of this experience. My tasks are tailor made to me and what I’m specifically interested in within the publishing process.

I informed the staff here that I’m very interested in editorial, with an open mind towards other departments. The tasks I was then given included reading submissions from the slush pile and offering my thoughts and opinions, reading and reviewing a collection of short stories, proofing finished books to make sure there were no pages missing, and generally shadowing various staff members to truly get a feel for what their roles entail.

This evening I’m going to be attending and helping out at the book launch for ‘History of the Royal Hibernian Academy of Arts’ by John Turpin, along with the rest of the team, which should be a wonderful evening. The atmosphere in The Lilliput Press is so cosy and welcoming, not to mention the two adorably friendly office dogs, Phoebe and Maisie, which made my work experience all the more enjoyable.
