An abridged version of Charles Lysaght’s speech at Adrian Kenny’s launch. I am honoured to be invited to launch this reissue by Lilliput Press (with relatively minor additions) of a book entitled Before the Wax Hardened written by my friend Adrian Kenny and first published a quarter of a century ago. Of its many fine features the finest is its honesty. It is an intrusion of honesty into a notoriously dishonest genre of literature – autobiography. Autobiographies or memoirs are so often exercises in public relations written by the successful and would-be successful painting a sympathetic picture of themselves with a few discreet boasts. It may be that most people are happy not to have…

A few words by Pierre Joannon at the launch of Michél Deon’s Horseman, pass by! in April 2017. Towards the end of his life, Michel Déon showed an intense determination to see his translated memoir of his life in county Galway published in Ireland.  Far from emanating from mere literary vanity, his determination stemmed from Michel’s desire to acknowledge his gratitude towards the community, the country and the culture in which he had made his home since the early 1970s. Just before his death, Michel expressed this heartfelt appreciation in the book that we are launching today: “My lines on Ireland record the grateful thanks of a French writer who has learned to love Ireland…

Each fortnight HeadStuff brings an unadulterated critique of the global art scene. For their July issue HeadStuff focused on The Pantehoen of  Books and got in touch with Lilliput publisher Antony Farrell to write about censorship in publsihing. As part of documenta 14 in Kassel, The Parthenon of Books is a symbol of opposition to the banning of writings and the persecution of their authors. To realise this work, the Argentine artist Marta Minujín and the documenta 14 team are collecting books that have now been published anew after having been banned for years as well as those that are distributed legally in some countries but not in others. The installation is a replica of a temple…

This summer The Lilliput Press published Adrian Kenny’s remarkable memoir Before the Wax Hardened. Originally published in  1991, Lilliput is proud to reissue this portrayal of a generation, to which the author’s keen eye and clear style lend the truth and elegance of a classic. In a previous article in The Irish Times, Adrian shares his thoughts on writing. Adrian Kenny on writing memoir Adrian Kenny has written three memoirs detailing different periods of his life: Before the Wax Hardened, The Family Business and Istanbul Diary. A self-confessed frustrated novelist, he seems ill at ease with the idea that memoir might be his true calling. “There’s a need as deep as can be in people…

A documentary on the incredible Hubert Butler will air this Tuesday, 8 August on RTÉ One at 10.35 pm. Hubert Butler was one of the main reasons that Antony Farrell decided to establish The Lilliput Press in 1984, after discovering that Butler’s work was out of print. “Hubert Butler was one of the most extra ordinary Irish writers of the past century, as old as the century. He was aged eight-three when it was my privilege to meet him – one of a small handful to whom the word genius could be attached. We worked closely together on three of his five volumes of essays at his home in Kilkenny and my own in Westmeath….
