We now begin a series of posts, one a fortnight, from a young Irish citizen-journalist and poet recently back from China where he has lived for the past five years. He awaits his return.     I have been back in Ireland for about five weeks. I’m Irish, but I lived in China for about five years, in Shanghai and Suzhou. Suzhou is the capital of Jiangsu. Jiangsu is a province adjacent to Shanghai. Suzhou has ten million people. Shanghai has about twenty-five. No one would tell you that Jiangsu people sound like the Shanghainese, just a hundred kilometers away. They will tell you that Shanghai has its own language. But Shanghai has no province….

A friend and follower of The Lilliput Press chronicled his recent experience with COVID-19, as written about earlier. He here offers another tale from his youth. My very early childhood was spent in a village in West Cork, where my parents made a good living selling everything except their children to tourists. When I was three or perhaps four my hair was blond and my button nose freckled. Most, if not all, of the neighbours were swarthy and Iberian-looking. Nothing to do with Armadas! Much more ancient than that. Down in West Cork it’s a Milesian thing. Locals might ask ‘How’s it going boy?’ but they look like they’ve just popped over from Seville. I…

Following Friday night’s government announcement of strict measures for people in Ireland to stay home for at least two weeks in order to curb the spread of Covid-19, we are no long able to process orders.   Customers can continue to place orders with us through www.lilliputpress.ie and through bookshop websites, but orders will not be processed and shipping has been suspected until government restrictions are lifted. We will fulfil these as soon as we are able.   We want to thank all our customers and friends who have supported our authors so enthusiastically over the past few weeks. It is a difficult situation for any author to launch a book virtually and not to…

As part of Adrian Duncan’s virtual book tour for A Sabbatical in Leipzig, you can read an interview he held with Rob Doyle here.   ROB DOYLE: Hallo Adrian. I’ve spent the last two days reading your very fine new novel A Sabbatical in Leipzig. Before we talk about the book, how is it there in occupied Berlin? What’s the city like now? ADRIAN DUNCAN: It’s in lockdown now similar to the UK, but it’s been like this for the last 10 days. People walk in twos on the street, schools closed and playgrounds and all pubs and (heaven forbid) clubs too. ROB DOYLE: Yup. Same as it’s been here. Doubt I’ll be able to…

It’s time for the final blog post of Lilliput’s Top 35 books in 35 Years! What are your favourite Lilliput books? As we wave goodbye to 2019, let’s celebrate our staff favourite Lilliput fiction books!   1. Portobello Notebook by Adrian Kenny We love the cosy feel of this little gem of a book! This collection of stories is set in Portobello, on the edge of Dublin city centre, just inside the canal. The stories reflect on characters on the edge of life, personalities that do not quite fit in: Michael, the country boy who drowns himself; Harry, the old Jewish dealer living alone; Liam, the crude but jovial emigrant returning to Ireland for a…

Are you getting into the festive spirit? Lilliput is as festive as can be! What better way to kick-start that festive feeling than kicking back and looking at today’s favourite 5 reads, all with a festive feel! 1. Skelligs Haul by Michael Kirby Skelligs Haul is a generous compilation of Michael Kirby’s prose and poetry, appealing for his simple, elegant style, his knowledge of unique local lore, and his inimitable observations. Kirby, a man who spent nearly every day of his ninety-nine years on the beautiful Iveragh peninsula, apart from a brief period in the United States, knew better than most that survival demanded persistence, passion, civility and good humour. A segment of this book…
