Description:Leland Lewis Duncan was born in Lewisham, Kent, in 1862. His father was a civil servant. Duncan and his two younger sisters enjoyed a secure middle-class Victorian upbringing, and in 1882 he entered the War Office and rose through the ranks to be awarded an MVO and an OBE. He was unmarried and became a keen amateur historian and photographer, with close links to Ireland.
He took this collection of photographs between 1889 and 1984, and kept a scrapbook of notes to locate them. His subjects ranged from the big house and the mud cabin, to the well-dressed landlord's daughter and the impoverished peasant. Through his camera lens we view the meithal of men drinking Guiness after the rick of hay is finished, the straw-boy dressed for the wedding part, the woman at her spinning wheel, the bare-footed postboy and the big-boned blacksmith.
This remarkable collection of over one hundred photographs gives a unique and intimate view of rural life in the north-west of Ireland during late-Victorian times.
Only 8 copies remaining of this rare, sought-after book.
